Porcelain and ceramic tiles are both fired clay, but a few key differences decide which belongs in your project.
Water absorption & durability
Porcelain is denser and absorbs less than 0.5% water, making it harder, frost-resistant and suited to floors, wet areas and outdoors. Ceramic is softer and best for walls and lighter-traffic interiors.
Cost & workability
Ceramic is generally cheaper and easier to cut; porcelain costs more but lasts longer in demanding areas — often the better value over a building's life.
Choosing for the space
- Lobbies, commercial floors, outdoors → porcelain / large-format
- Feature walls, residential interiors → ceramic
- Wet areas → porcelain, with correct slip rating
